[OOC Issues]
How long could it take for my application to be approved?
A few days is likely, but it could take up to a week. Please keep that in mind when asking the mods about the status of your application.
How long should my application be?
As long as is necessary to get a good feel of your handle on the character you’re applying for. Make sure you indicate that you understand this character. It’s not necessary to write a novel, but you should write as much as you feel you need.
Why doesn't your game follow X theory on Z Cloverfield website?
Because if we tried to keep up with all the theories, our heads would asplode like bad crab bites.
In all seriousness, this game was created literally days after Cloverfield was released and should be considered AU from the movie. We can't (and won't) change the premise and laws of our game to incorporate every new theory or piece of information that comes out.
Is this game real-time?
No, but close. A week in the game equals two weeks in real life. The mods will post updates at the end of each in-game "week" to help you keep track of the passage of time.
What kind of plots are allowed?
Almost any. We have our mod-run plots and events, and we also have muns creating subplots between two or three or many characters every day. We highly encourage this and we love to see our players get creative. That said, there are some plots that the mods should be consulted about before you play them out. This includes anything that would involve the monster or its territory (i.e. Central Park), something that would involve the crabs beyond a simple encounter, something that would affect a large group of people, etc. We also ask to be consulted for plots that have long-term and/or deeply traumatic effects on a character (i.e. rape, mutilation, pregnancy, death, etc). Some of these plots may not be appropriate for this community. When in doubt, ask a mod.
What kind of characters are allowed?
Project Daisychain allowsall most kinds of characters from all most kinds of series. Among our cast you can find humans, demons, talking animals, mutants, aliens, a possessed book and everything in between. We really have received applications or requests for every kind of creature imaginable! As we've come to realize, not all types of characters work for this game--the rule of thumb is that your character should be alive (many of our characters arrive fresh from near-death experiences, but they should not actually be dead) and organic, i.e. not entirely a machine. Exceptions to the above are characters who are dead but are still capable of being wounded, such as the shinigami from Bleach or the unsent from Final Fantasy X.
Your characters should also be capable of communicating with other characters in at least some way--an animal who can't speak to or understand humans will be pretty difficult to play with.
We also do not allow real (nonfictional) people. A character depicting a historical figure from a fictional canon is okay. Actors/actresses, singers/bands are not.
If you have any questions about which characters are appropriate, contact the mods.
Are original characters allowed?
Project Daisychain is not accepting original characters at this time.
Can I play a Cloverfield character?
No. The only characters related to the movie are the monster and the parasite crabs.
Can I play the alternate universe/Kingdom Hearts version of a character who is already taken?
Yes, with limitations. In order to play an AU version of a taken character, your application must be for a legitimate, official alternate universe--for example, Kingdom Hearts versions of a Final Fantasy character, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles versions of a CLAMP character, movieverse versions of a comic book character, etc. Furthermore, there may be no more than two versions of the same character at any time.
This is decided on a case-by-case basis and is left up to mod discretion. If you are interested in playing an AU version of a character, please contact the mods for consideration.
Can I play the monster or a parasite crab?
No.
Should my character be a Manhattan native or be pulled in from another world?
It’s up to you. You can modify your character’s history to make it possible for them to have been in Manhattan before the attack, as long as personality remains canon. Alternately you can choose to have your character taken from his or her home world.
What happens when characters are “pulled in”?
They black out in their own world and wake up somewhere in Manhattan—in an abandoned building, in the middle of the street, wherever. They will feel woozy and disoriented for a few hours and will find that their usual capabilities (special powers, abilities, etc) are dramatically weakened. Most locals will try to help a new arrival get to shelter and tell them what they need to know about the monster, the parasite crabs, etc.
My character is very powerful in his or her own canon (certainly capable of killing a monster or two). Will he or she retain these powers?
No. A character’s power is severely reduced when he or she arrives in Manhattan and does not come back. Some say something is done to them before they wake to limit their capabilities…
My character carries a signature weapon or item. Are they allowed to keep these?
That depends on the nature of the weapon. For the most part, the answer is no. Characters who carry guns, swords or other physical weapons will not have them upon awakening in Manhattan. There is an exception made if the character summons his or her weapon and it is usually magically stored out of reach-- for example, Sora's Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts. In this case the character can keep their weapon, but its summoning will be limited along with the rest of their powers. This is left up to mod discretion. Contact the mods if you have any questions about this.
Our default position is that each and every character comes into Manhattan with only the clothes on their backs. It doesn't matter if your character has Laharl's Scarf of Holding, or TARDIS pockets, or anything like that: they won't have any weaponry or special items from their worlds when they get to the city. Occasionally exceptions are made for special items that could be considered part of the character's outfit. This is decided on a case-by-case basis and the mods must be consulted about such items before they show up in the game.
The only other exception is if your character is a Manhattanite--a character who did not come from another world, but who was living in Manhattan at the time of the monster's first attack. They will be allowed to keep their personal possessions, but they may find a few things missing...
My character is normally accompanied by a pet/animal companion/familiar. Will they be allowed to keep them?
So far we have asked that applicants whose characters include animal companions to leave them out.
By the way, it's been a while since anyone has seen any animals at all, even those native to Manhattan...

Who is Big Mommy?
The monster. Big Mommy is a name used by many of the locals, but feel free to have your characters call it Cloverfield, the monster, or anything else.
What are parasite crabs?
Crab/bug-like creatures roughly the size of a bull dog that dropped from the hide of Big Mommy. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of the vicious things; they primarily inhabit the subways and the sewers. Parasite crabs will attack living creatures without provocation and can claw and bite them. Bites from a parasite crab lead to a mysterious wasting infection.
What is the parasite crab infection?
No one knows, but we do know the effects—anyone who’s infected begins showing symptoms within a week. Over a period of several months your character will gradually get sicker and weaker, and the bite wound will not heal. Symptoms are similar to that of tuberculosis: the infected will experience fever, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite and loss of weight. Coughing and difficulty breathing are common. Within a month or two the infected will begin coughing up blood. Parasite crab infection requires treatment that only a select few individuals in the city can provide. It’s rumored that if the infection is left untreated for approximately four months or so, something horrible will happen.
Can parasite crabs be destroyed?
Yes. Blunt force or a good hack in two ought to do it.
Can Big Mommy be destroyed?
Not as far as anyone knows. It’d take a lot more firepower than anyone in Manhattan has.
Is there any way off the island of Manhattan?
Nope. Once in, you’re in for good. All bridges and tunnels have been destroyed or blocked off, and the portals are one-way only.
But there’s all this debris lying around, hasn’t anyone tried making a raft?
They’ve tried it. No one ever found their remains.
What if I try making a raft?
Don’t do it. Really. Big Mommy will not be pleased.
How come the government isn’t trying to rescue us, or the military isn’t bombing us off the face of the Earth?
No one knows. Well, maybe some people do, but not anyone you’ll talk to.
Where is the monster most of the time?
Underground or swimming in the water around the island. It dug into the ground in the middle of Central Park and seems to have made itself a series of tunnels using the subway system, but it’s been known to appear above-ground all over the island.
Where are most of the people?
Most people have clustered in Greenwich and East Villages, where there are residences, safe houses, restaurants, stores (supply centers), and the like. If your character chooses to live elsewhere they will likely be seriously isolated.
Are there any areas off-limit in Manhattan?
You can go anywhere in the city you choose if you’re prepared for the consequences. The subways are infested with parasite crabs and Central Park is virtually a no-man’s land, having little cover from the crabs or the monster itself, but the rest of the city is fair game. Just don’t get comfortable—there is no telling when the monster will appear above-ground, or where.
If I see the monster, will I be killed?
Not necessarily, but you might want to duck inside the nearest building and pray. Very hard.
I was bitten by a parasite crab, and now I’m infected. How do I get treatment?
The healers are very difficult to find. You might have to ask around a lot before finding anyone who knows anything at all about them. Just keep in mind the graffiti that keeps appearing on the walls of the city—particularly the word “daisychain”.
