::monster faq::
Wondering how Cloverfield and the parasite crabs are going to be used in Project Daisychain? Read on to find out.
[Cloverfield]
Who controls the monster?
The mods do. Not that Big Mommy will have her own journal or be showing up in your open threads.
But I want to have my character(s) interact with it!
You'll get a chance sooner or later. Monster encounters WILL happen, just not as you might think. Most if not all monster encounters will have already happened by the time you thread about it--meaning that your character(s) will be reacting to the aftermath.
How will that work?
The mods will announce a monster encounter on
daisychainmb on the day it occurs. We will tell you where, what time of day, and who will be getting up-close and personal with Big Mommy, as well as any lasting effects (buildings/monuments destroyed, character injuries, etc). You get to post about the aftermath and your character's reaction, whether in a thread or a journal entry. These encounters will NOT occur every week and the characters involved will be chosen at random. Keep in mind that your character could come out of a monster encounter with a serious injury.
What if I don't want to have a monster encounter?
There will be an ongoing thread for players to volunteer their characters for monster encounters or parasite crab bites. Only volunteered characters will ever see the monster up-close. Again, they will be chosen at random (meaning it could be many weeks before your character gets to meet Big Mommy) and again, they could come out of it with a serious injury, although we will not maim or kill them. At the very least he or she ought to experience psychological trauma. But we think this is all great plot and character-developing fodder, so we would encourage you to volunteer.
Will Big Mommy be involved in the game in any other way than the previously-described monster encounters?
In our bi-weekly updates on
daisychainmb, the mods will occasionally announce where and when Big Mommy will make above-ground appearances. If your character happens to be where it appears, you can have them glimpse it from afar--but do not have them get in its path or see it any closer than two or three blocks. There are no direct encounters unless announced by the mods or given special permission.
Aside from simply seeing the monster, let's just say that there are many details about Cloverfield that your characters would probably be interested in finding out. The monster is shrouded in mystery, but nothing stays a mystery forever. We would suggest paying close attention to the grafitti.
[Parasite Crabs]
Who controls parasite crabs?
They're NPCs, meaning that anyone can control them, with limits.
What limits?
In our bi-weekly updates, the mods will announce what areas of the city are experiencing particularly high crab infestations. If your characters go to these parts of the city, they can encounter a crab (meaning that you, the player, can write one or two or many into your threads). Your characters can run away, attack or be attacked, and/or be scratched, but they cannot be bitten without mod permission. Additionally, your characters cannot encounter crabs anywhere outside of these infested areas without mod permission. This is simply because we don't want to see parasite crabs showing up in every thread.
But what if I want my character to be bitten?
Volunteer for it in the monster encounter/parasite crab bite thread. In our bi-weekly updates, the mods will announce who, if anyone, is going to be bitten that in-game week. You can play this out anywhere and anytime in a thread. Remember that if you volunteer, there is no opting out the week your character is to be bitten. If you don't play it out in a thread we will assume your character is infected anyway.
What happens after my character is bitten?
He or she automatically gets parasite crab infection and will begin showing symptoms within a week. Over a period of several months your character will gradually get sicker and weaker, and the bite wound will not heal. The blood will not congeal like a normal wound, and blood and pus may ooze from the wound.
A detailed list of symptoms follows:
One Day – Victim will begin to experience tiredness and fatigue.
Four Days – Victim will begin coughing and experiencing flu-like symptoms.
One Week – Victim will experience a terrible lasting fever and begin eating less.
Two Weeks – Victim will be suffering a loss of weight and energy, and will have difficulty breathing.
One Month – Victim will be bedridden and begin to cough up blood. Any characters with special abilities will be unable to summon any weapons, magic or powers.
Two Months – Victim will continue to be bedridden and coughing up blood. They are likely to have lost a sixth of their body weight by now.
Three Months – Victim will be completely bedridden, barely able to speak or move, and unable to keep down anything but liquids.
Three months and three weeks – Victim will be completely immobile. They may experience occasional violent spasms or seizures, bleeding from the eyes and ears, vomiting blood, and severe itching over their entire body.
Update It has been revealed that leaving a bite left untreated any longer than this will result in a very sudden and violent transformation. The victim will cough up a strange blue-green liquid, experience seizures, and then mutate into a 300-foot-tall Cloverfield monster themselves. They lose all of their higher brain processes and become as mindless and violent as the original Cloverfield.
We suggest having your character begin seeking out treatment right away, as the few Healers in the city capable of healing him or her may be very difficult to find. Pay attention to the grafitti and where it appears--the word "daisychain" or a picture of it might mean that someone who can help your character is nearby.
Will everyone who volunteers for a bite get bitten?
No.
Can I volunteer my character for monster encounters and parasite crab bites?
Yes, but the chances of both happening are slim, and if your unlucky character does happen to experience both, they will be spaced far apart timewise.
My character has an innate healing ability. Can he or she be a curer?
Talk to the mods. Curers are important and we are looking for more, but there are some guidelines for them that you will need to know. No matter what healing powers your character has, he or she cannot cure parasite crab infection unless you've been given mod permission.
